Energy Resources

How does energy usage affect the climate?

When we burn fossil fuels like oil and gas for energy (and transportation), we release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which builds up and acts like a blanket that traps in heat. This buildup of heat is resulting in climate changes that are already affecting us and the many species and ecosystems we depend on.

Actions you take to reduce the burning of fossil fuels will have the greatest impact on reducing climate change. Using clean, renewable energy means that your electrical use doesn’t contribute to climate change since no fuels are combusted. But it’s also important to reduce the amount of electricity that we use through conservation and efficiency.

GGNRA's 2016 Climate Chance Action Plan describes more of our goals for addressing climate change.

What YOU can do at GGNRA:

If you have and idea or action related to energy, submit it to the Earth Month Staff Challenge!

  • Are the light bulbs in your office still not LED?

  • Do you or your co-workers turn computers off at the end of the day?

  • Are there conservation policies that you can share with park partners?

  • What other ideas do you have to reduce energy use?
